Diaper Jitters

Diaper Jitters

Finally. The wait was over. No more passing by the phone. No more calling to see if she was alright. No more waiting. The day was sunny and bright. I could only see one cloud in the sky, and it was in the shape of joy. There were birds calling, and the crickets were chirping. The world seemed to be bursting into life. It was June 20th, 2008, the day my niece, Amy, was born. It was three days later when I finally was able to see her. She had long brown hair; it seemed to hug her small dimpled face, and baby blue eyes that were clear enough to swim in. Her skin was soft as cold satin. Her fingers were about a quarter of the size of my own.  My sister was really tired; who could blame her? So my mom and I let her have a nap as we cared for Amy.

Amy looked so peaceful. She was laying on the floor staring at me, trying to figure out who I was. She is so cute! I am to lucky. All of a sudden her face turned really red, and her eyes began to bulge out of her head. Was she dying? Could she breathe? I quickly put my hand on her chest to make sure it was moving up and down. Her heart was pounding out of her chest like a butterfly trying to get out of a cocoon. Then it hit me. The smell of rotten eggs on a hot day. My nose tingled, and I felt like I was going to faint. I yelled at mom. She came running in. "What? Whats wrong?" She asked me. I looked up at her and asked if she could smell that awful stench. She just looked at me and laughed. "That is Amy." She told me then she laughed her way back into the kitchen.

I looked at Amy. How could such a small person make such an awful smell? She seemed to smile at me, and then I knew what she had done. That smell, that smile, the weird bulge in her sleeper. It was all coming to me. Amy had pooped.

Mom walked in with a diaper and wipes. She shoved them in my hands. She was an Olympic speed racer as she dashed back into the kitchen. WHAT? She wanted me to change her. I couldn't change her. What if I hurt her when I lift up her legs? What if I open the diaper and she peed all over me? What if I put the new diaper on upside down and backwards?

I looked at Amy again. She must have been uncomfortable with all that poop stuffed in her diaper. I began to feel sorry for her and unbutton her little polka dotted sleeper. The smell seemed worse, and I thought I was going to be sick. I lifted her legs out of the sleeper and pulled the bottom of the sleeper up under her back. It looked like she had grown a third bum cheek. She is done her business; I can take the diaper off I thought while grabbing hold of the tabs that held the diaper together. I then pulled on the tabs and opened the diaper. The smell engulfed my nose, and I was sure I had dropped of the earth into a vat of sewer water.

I pulled the diaper out from under her, and grabbed a wipe out of the container. I wiped off Amy's bum, and made sure to get all the nooks and cranys (as mom calls it.) I then set the very dirty, and smelly wipe onto the dirty diaper, and grabbed the fresh diaper. Diapers are easy to put on I thought. I pulled the diaper up underneath Amy's bum, and made sure that the tabs were on the top. Then I attached the tabs to the top of the diaper. I did it! I thought. I slipped her body back into the sleeper, and did up the buttons. It wasn't that bad. I looked back down at Amy. Her baby blue eyes glistened at me. "I could do without the smell though," I told Amy, and smiled back at her.
